Essay Comparison of Poetry of a Different Culture

Comparison of Poetry of a Different Culture We live in a society where culture and identity are very important. Culture is the distinctive practices and beliefs of a society. Culture is all about where we live, our language, the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the celebrations we celebrate and the things we value. Many people who live in poorer countries move over to the bigger cities were there are more jobs and money. Many people end up living in a place they dont know. In English we have studied five poems from another culture, which was Jamaica. All the culture poems we studied were mostly about a man or woman wanting to go back to Jamaica. The first word of the poem, morning sets the scene for the rest of the poem. The line, The island man wakes up to the sound of blue surf in his head, tells us the man imagines blue waves in his head. Right from the start of the poem we learn that the poets homeland is very important to him. The line, the steady breaking and wombing is comforting, the word breaking is a sea sound and the word wombing is a surf sound. The second stanza is like the Caribbean man is coming out of his dream. The words Emerald Island are a colour metaphor and he makes it sound like the island is precious to him. Emeralds are precious stones. The words groggily, groggily are like an echo, reflecting the sleepy mood of the island man. In the third stanza we learn what London is like. The words grey metallic soar gave a strong impression of the traffic and the city life. The line, North circular roar, North circular is a road in London and the Caribbean man lives near it. The word heaves means he doesnt want to do something but forces himself to do it. This verse is in complete contrast to the earlier images of Island life. In the last line the phrase, Another London day, the man is saying that he is ready to face another day in London. Similarities Of Jesus And Confucius Essay Example For Students

Similarities Of Jesus And Confucius Essay Confucius created a system of thinking called Confucianism. If only one word could be used to summarize the Chinese way of life for the last two thousand years, that word would be Confucian. No other person has had as great an effect on the life and thought of the Chinese people as Confucius. He is the most adored person in Chinese history. Confucius claimed no greatness, instead he looked to a past time that he saw as the golden age. He told one of his disciples, I transmit but I do not create. I am sincerely fond of the ancient. I would compare myself to Old Peng who was fond of talking about the good old days. Confucius was a transmitter of the wisdom of the past. From his study of Chinese tradition, he gathered the teachings that would influence people throughout time to the present. Despite the fact that Confucius lived in a time of turmoil, his philosophy emphasized an ideal society filled with order and harmony. Confucius was born in the village of Zou in the country of Lu in 55 BCE, he was a poor descendant of what used to bee a noble family. As a child, he held make-believe temple rituals; as a young adult, he earned a reputation for being fair, polite and he had a great love for learning. He travelled a lot and studied at the capital, Zhou, where he is said to have met and spoke with Lao Zi, the founder of Daoism. When Confucius returned to Lu, he became a renowned teacher, but when he was 35, Duke Zhao of Lu led his country to war and Confucius was drafted. Duke Zhao frequently came to him for advice, but when being counselled by one of his ministers, he decided against granting land to Confucius and gradually stopped seeking his help. When other nobles began plotting against Confucius, Duke Zhao refused to intervene and Confucius returned to Lu. When he got there he realized conditions were no better than before and Confucius decided to concentrate on teaching and studying. At age 50, he was approached by the Baron of Qi to help defend against a rebellion, but he declined. He was later made a city magistrate by the Duke of Lu and under his administration the city flourished; he was promoted many times, eventually becoming Grand Secretary of Justice(see figure3-1) and at age 56, Chief Minister of Lu. Neighbouring countries began to worry that Lu would become too powerful and so they sent mess engers with gifts and dancers to distract the duke during a sacrifice holiday. When the duke abandoned his duties to receive messengers , Confucius resigned and left the country. Confucius spent the next five years wondering China with his disciples, finding that he was rarely wanted at all royal courts and it did not take long before nobles would begin plotting to drive him out or have him killed. He was arrested once and jailed for five days and at 62 he was chased, along with his disciples, into the countryside by a group of soldiers sent by a jealous nobles, until he was able to send a messenger to the King of a nearby country, who sent his own soldiers to rescue them. Once again, Confucius was to be given land, but was denied it by another high minister. He eventually returned to Lu a t age 67. Although he was welcomed there and chose to stay, he was not offered public office again, nor did he want it. Instead he spent the rest of his years teaching and writing. He died at age 72. .u0569d9db65811bb7bd37b74828f12603 , .u0569d9db65811bb7bd37b74828f12603 .postImageUrl , .u0569d9db65811bb7bd37b74828f12603 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u0569d9db65811bb7bd37b74828f12603 , .u0569d9db65811bb7bd37b74828f12603:hover , .u0569d9db65811bb7bd37b74828f12603:visited , .u0569d9db65811bb7bd37b74828f12603:active { border:0!important; } .u0569d9db65811bb7bd37b74828f12603 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u0569d9db65811bb7bd37b74828f12603 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u0569d9db65811bb7bd37b74828f12603:active , .u0569d9db65811bb7bd37b74828f12603:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u0569d9db65811bb7bd37b74828f12603 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u0569d9db65811bb7bd37b74828f12603 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u0569d9db65811bb7bd37b74828f12603 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u0569d9db65811bb7bd37b74828f12603 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u0569d9db65811bb7bd37b74828f12603:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u0569d9db65811bb7bd37b74828f12603 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u0569d9db65811bb7bd37b74828f12603 .u0569d9db65811bb7bd37b74828f12603-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u0569d9db65811bb7bd37b74828f12603:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Free Things They Carrieds: Very Deep and Tou EssayMore than any other human being on the face of the earth, Confucius set up a pattern of thinking followed by more people, for more generations than one can possibly imagine.
